Recipients and chairs announced for SSHRC and tri-agency opportunities | On August 29, the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, announced support for over 4,700 researchers and research projects across Canada. The more than $960 million in grants, scholarships and program investments support world-leading research, and a diverse, inclusive, innovative Canadian research ecosystem. Recipients announced include those of Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships; Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships; and SSHRC’s Partnership Grants, Partnership Development Grants and Insight Grants, among others. Boissonnault also announced 82 new and 75 renewed Canada Research Chairs, plus the three recipients of the inaugural Robbins-Ollivier Award for Excellence in Equity. | |

New Frontiers in Research Fund opens 2023 Exploration and 2024 Transformation competitions | The tri-agency New Frontiers in Research Fund, administered by SSHRC, has launched its 2023 Exploration and 2024 Transformation stream competitions. Exploration supports high-risk, high-reward, interdisciplinary research, while Transformation supports large-scale, Canadian-led interdisciplinary and world-leading research projects addressing a major challenge and having potential to create real, lasting change. Deadline for Exploration notices of intent is October 11, 2023, with full applications due December 12. Deadline for the Transformation notices of intent is October 24, 2023, with letters of intent due January 10, 2024. | |

Learn first-hand on Parliament Hill how research can impact Canadian policy | Apply before October 11 to be part of the next annual Science Meets Parliament, May 6 and 7, 2024. The event offers 100 Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs and Banting Postdoctoral Fellows and Indigenous principal investigators a chance to better understand the parliamentary process and learn about the inclusion of research evidence in policy-making in Parliament, and experience a day behind the scenes on Parliament Hill. Participants meet with members of Parliament and senators, attend House and Senate committee meetings, discuss research, and become familiar with the political process. | |

Research tip of the month: Evolving Narratives of Cultures and Histories | SSHRC, with Canadian Heritage, Genome Canada and the United Kingdom Research and Innovation’s Arts and Humanities Research Council has launched an international Knowledge Synthesis Grants opportunity on Evolving Narratives of Cultures and Histories, one of 16 challenges identified through SSHRC’s Imagining Canada’s Future initiative. New wave of Indigenous cinema is opening eyes
|
Anishinaabe (Temagami) film and media scholar Tyson Stewart is applying his Insight Development Grant to study and promote the revolutionary "New Wave" of Indigenous filmmaking stemming from the Truth and Reconciliation process. Indigenous Studies program co-chair and assistant professor at Nipissing University, Stewart says current films not only reflect a broad range of Indigenous identities and stories, but are helping viewers and filmmakers process and understand political and social realities.

Building both the tech and the policies to meet real communities’ energy needs |
Combining social sciences, engineering and science, a research team supported by a New Frontiers in Research grant is working with communities to develop clean solutions that respond to community needs. The project is co-led by associate professor Kate Neville, of the University of Toronto’s Department of Political Science and its School of the Environment. Zeroing in on the Yukon and southern Ontario, CANSTOREnergy aims to develop solutions that are workable for both, very different, regions, including for renewable energy storage, community energy development approaches and economic sustainability.
