SSHRC funds new research projects to meet the needs of organizations in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, including those related to COVID-19

Last spring, SSHRC took aim against the pandemic by creating a special initiative for COVID-19 research under its Partnership Engage Grants, and committed to holding two competitions, one in June 2020 and another in September 2020. SSHRC is pleased to announce that the second competition has resulted in 111 new grants totalling more than $2.5 million.

Since the number of applications for the first COVID-19 grant competition in June was significantly higher than expected, SSHRC reallocated over $5 million to this initiative. In total, the special initiative has awarded more than $7.1 million in funding to nearly 300 research projects. During the pandemic, the world has turned to social sciences and humanities research for answers. This funding will allow researchers to address COVID-19 related issues such as the adaptability of health services organizations, domestic violence and the mental health of disadvantaged youth.

In addition to the special initiative for COVID-19 grants, SSHRC is also pleased to announce the September results for the regular Partnership Engage Grants competition. The grants—37 in all, totalling more than $800,000—will provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at organizations in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors nationwide.
